Dulture weekly mix

This week’s mix reminds me of the age old question, WHY DO WE DO DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME??

British Columbia just ended it, so their clocks will go forward on Sunday and never go back again. I like that.

We do petitions for all kinds of stuff in the world, where’s the petition for this? No seriously, where is it, I’ll sign it. I’m done with waking up in the dark all winter.

Why is everyone launching a newsletter?

Because it’s how creators turn attention into an owned audience, and an audience into a real, compounding business.

The smartest creators aren’t chasing followers. They’re building lists. And they’re building them on beehiiv, where growth, monetization, and ownership are built in from day one.

If you’re serious about turning what you know into something you own, there’s no better place to start. Find out why the fastest-growing newsletters choose beehiiv.

And for a limited time, take advantage of 30% off your first 3 months with code LIST30.

Every so often this lecture from Virgil Abloh at Harvard comes up in my feed.

I remember watching it when it first came out and then kicking myself for not trying to go to his talk when he was in Toronto the year prior.

I remember seeing the ad and thought, I’ll see him next time.

...yeah 🕊

Since his passing in 2021 there was only one more Off White x Nike collab that came out - I don’t even remember these but given the price, I guess I know why.

In 2025, off the Virgil Abloh archives show in Paris, Nike and the Virgil Abloh Archives brand showcased a ton of shoes that had never been released with a couple that were apparently supposed to be released at some point?

So these released ... according to StockX, with only one pair out in the world (supposedly).

And then these were rumoured to have a Qatar-only release, right around the World Cup but that fell through, and then a world wide release also fell through - most likely because of Virgil’s passing.

Thus, we haven’t seen an Off-White x Nike collab in a good 5 years, although I don’t think we ever will again.  (Off-White still a brand people care about?)

Later this month we’re finally getting a full release of a Virgil Abloh Archive Nike collab - the AJ1 “Alaska’s” which were originally released as an Off White collab in Europe in 2018 - which is maybe why these shoes look like a new pair, doubt a lot of us saw these on our side of the Atlantic.

Doubt a lot of us were paying $2-$4K resale for these either.

These will obviously sell out immediately and be resold for 4-5x (OR MORE) minimum given they’re the first Nike collab with the Virgil Abloh Archive.

I think these are the sneaker of the year though, I can’t think of another silhouette that will stand up to these.

Good luck to all the hype beasts and enthusiasts out there, may the shoe deities bless your SNKRS app.

Dinosaurs: The Billionaire’s New Toy

Incoming cliché question…

I’ll be surprised if I see any responses back on the last option but maybe after reading this you’ll change your mind and vote again.

Later this month, “Trey” the Triceratops, will be up for auction.

“Trey”

Move over Logan Paul and your Pokémon cards - there’s a new collectible sheriff in town AND THEY HAVE F-YOU MONEY.

Trey could fetch upwards to $5M, which is chump change in comparison to “Apex”, a Stegosaurus that was sold a couple years back for $44.6M at Sotheby’s.

But it’s a sign of the growing fossil market that is starting to see a ton of activity, especially from buyers in the Middle East where collectors in places like Dubai are building their own personal dinosaur collection behind the scenes.

The world of dinosaur bones is no longer just for the likes of Ross from Friends. In fact, archeologists and museums alike are benefiting from these rich collectors as they’re forking up large sums to not only purchase these fossils but also they then loan them out for public display and scientific purposes.

Why dinosaurs?

It’s simple - original dinosaur fossils can’t be made again so you essentially have a one of one with every fossil. What investor doesn’t like that?

Also the fact that, although a ton of fossils get discovered all the time, there’s actually a lot of scarcity with “museum” quality fossils meaning the wealthy are bidding millions to own a fossil that could be put on display for school kids to see or dinner guests in the mansion.

I’m just waiting for the reality show on the Discovery Channel now where a father and son duo go out digging for T-Rex teeth in order to sell them into the market and make a living. Yup, totally original concept for a show for Discovery.

Time To Dust Off Those Guitars

Lemme paint the picture for you:

  • Pizza

  • Some form of beverage that isn’t good for you (but tastes so good)

  • A very late night

  • A couple of your best buds

  • A glowing screen with what looks like train tracks of circles and stars

  • Music

If this wasn’t one of the more fun nights in your life, then I don’t know what is.

Of course I’m talking about the good old days of playing Guitar Hero or Rock Band with your friends. (could the description have been anything else?)

The last time I was engulfed in the music gaming world was in a Taito Game Station in Tokyo on the “music” floor where every game is either a DanceDance Revolution type of thing or a guitar or drum simulation where the salary man sits own and unassumingly destroys the game in dress pants and a dress shirt.

(I have video evidence of this somewhere)

The Japanese don’t play around when it comes to their music arcade games.

Earlier this week the makers of Guitar Hero (and I guess Rock Band to some extent..it’s a long story) announced Stage Tour, essentially a revival of the music band genre of gaming that died from collecting dust at your local Walmart.

On shelves everywhere, never seen a soul buy this

Both franchises effectively died because they just kept on releasing the same game over and over - I had no idea they made it to a Rock Band 5??

Don’t get me wrong, these games were a ton of fun to play but after a while, Sweet Child of Mine just became REALLY REALLY annoying to listen to, let alone play a game with.

I can still hear that sound when you miss a note, and then you keep missing notes and they boo you.

So wtf is Stage Tour?

We don’t really know because a lot of the website basically says “stay tuned”. But let’s be perfectly honest, we know exactly wtf this game is - it’s a reboot of the music peripheral game we fell in love with in our parents’ basement.

And although that was like 10-15 years ago, maybe the idea of rocking out with your eyes glazed over as you watch the colourful notes glide up the screen doesn’t sound so bad anymore.

I don’t know - I do remember really enjoying singing Say It Ain’t So by Weezer though 🤷‍♂

A New League for Skateboarding

If you follow skateboarding then you’re already aware of the SLS, the first of its kind league created for skaters, almost like a “season” of park competitions.

The SLS flipped the script for skaters where scoring in competitions became super standardized and the competitions became these tours that the skaters could earn money on with every stop - but aside from adding the much needed structure and organization around the competitions, at the end of the day they were still competitions.

There’s nothing I enjoy more than a lil innovation in sport - enter: The PSL.

The Professional Skateboarding League launched last month and I must say, if you were on the fence about skateboarding, if it wasn’t something you’d tune in to (for whatever reason), this league might just be the thing you may want to give a chance to.

Consisting of “SKATE” (better known as HORSE in the basketball world) rules, the league has weekly matches where teams compete against each other in the best way I can describe it, kinda like innings in baseball?

So when team 1 is up, they do their trick, if they land it then team 2 needs to also land the same trick and if they don’t, team 1 scores points. The matches consist of 5 rounds, or is called if a team is up by 5+ points (mercy rule).

This league kinda gives me Big 3 vibes from basketball.

It’s got all the makings of the sport, has some pretty big names (Paul Rodriguez, Nyjah Houston, Ginwoo), and matches are actually interesting - there’s legit strategy with the skating. Who should go first, who’s going to play “defense”, what tricks are the safe ones vs the ones that are risky but necessary to score points.

I don’t know how I feel about the team jerseys but the league is legit - you can support your favourite skater and/or team and grab a jersey.

Year 1 is always a little wonky

It’s also got a bit of a golf meets street culture broadcast vibe to it. If you’re not into skating but one of those people who likes to have something on in the background, this also works well lol.
