This Week in Dulture…

Approx 5 minute read:

🌴 You’re not wearing this shoe this summer and it shows

🎉 I thought I’d miss the NBA til October, but nope

Dulture weekly mix

This is easily my most favourite thing to do every week. All 30,000+ of y’all get blessed by my musical taste. What will he put out next? What’s going through his mind? How emo is he feeling?

Well you know what - I’m feeling pretty damn emo this week. My kids introduced me to Olivia Rodrigo’s new album a couple weeks back and lowkey it slaps fam. If you’re a fan of music (like, literally if you just like music) you should be listening to her new album - she’s 23 but her musical influence goes from bands like The Cure all the way to Rage Against the Machine.

So this week’s mix is a reflection of the music that inspired her new album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.

Also I just had to throw in some extras because I’m still playing Ice Man - the transition in this mix from The Smashing Pumpkins to Drake is world class like a Ronaldo PK so please enjoy.

I’m convinced we experience a bunch of “last time’s” every week and not even realize it.

It’s even crappier when it’s the first time and the last time at the exact same time and you still don’t realize it until later.

I’m sure there’s a quote out there that expresses this much more eloquently than me but I’m too lazy to Google it.

CONFUSION ASIDE…

Looks so unassuming from the outside

Last summer while in Kyoto we stumbled upon a quaint little coffee shop which turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. Usagi Coffee, created and owned by Ryo Ishikawa, was this traditional looking on the outside coffee shop and modern oasis on the inside.

Ryo is the founder of a couple popular Japanese streetwear brands - #FR2 and Vanquish. If you’re familiar with Japanese brands then you already know, if you aren’t then you should do yourself a favour and click those 2.

Usagi Coffee is exactly how you would expect a streetwear designer to envision a coffee shop. From the minimalist set up on the inside to the coffee shop’s branded clothing - what coffee shop has their own merch??

I don’t like coffee but I’d rock coffee merch all day if it looked like this 👆

Ironically I’ve never had a cup of coffee in my life.

Full circle: The Kyoto location closed down a couple months after we went - didn’t realize my first time would be my last time.

This all reminds me of Flyknit Racers.

When Nike released everything in Flyknit material I thought for sure these shoes were going to be a staple in the yearly line up - after all, Time Magazine named the Flyknit Racer as one its best inventions of 2012 for its construction and eco-friendly profile.

These over Yeezy Boosts IMO don’t @ me

As I picked up a pair in 2013 I thought for sure they’d be around forever until they weren’t, and then they were again in 2016/2017 for a minute and then GONE. My first time turned into my last time…and I don’t feel like spending $400-$500 on Flyknit Racers.

Forget Sambas, forget AF1’s, forget Travis Scott blah blah blah

Given we’re in full on in summer mode, not only am I reminded to pull mine out of the closet, but also these are easily one of the best, if not THE BEST pair of shoes to wear in the summer.

(who am I kidding I want these so bad…I’d drop a few bills on them)

The NBA Has Had a WEEK

It all started like a week ago when the Hornets traded Lamelo Ball to the T-Wolves creating easily the flashiest duo on court and most loosely outspoken duo off the court in the league.

Yup: I will be watching a lot more T-Wolves games this season.

The internet stays undefeated

Right around then rumours started up around Kawhi Leonard wanting to go back to either Toronto or the Spurs.  BRO WHAT.

I figured it was nonsense - when dude came here originally he specifically said he was only going to stay for one year, regardless of what happened.

The entire city agrees when I say he should’ve stayed another year and ran back the exact same team so we could at least go back and back - we would’ve destroyed the Lakers in that stupid Disney World bubble.

And then we get the news...

If you’re wondering what Toronto thinks of Kawhi coming back, I can tell you with utmost confidence that we look forward to playing the Knicks in the ECF...if the Knicks can run it back ;)

That’s not all folks!

LOL

I’m setting the over/under on Bronny getting waived by the Lakers at like 20 games now. I think they’ll probably keep him in the G League a lot longer now buuut I think dude gets waived and bounces to a smaller market.

Also, what’s all this talk about Lebron reuniting with Anthony Davis in OLDen State?

Remember that film where Sylvester Stallone basically took every old action star and put them in a movie?

He’s let the beard go grey, has found a new love in golf, and continues to release ugly-ass shoes - what else needs to happen for LeBron to realize he needs to retire?

The craziest part is teams can’t sign players to contracts until July 6th, so none of this is actually official official...stay tuned as the crazy off season continues.

(Oh and Paul George for Jaylen Brown is NOT a fair trade in the slightest - gg’s Boston)

Sony is Killing Physical Games

I’m still waiting for when CD’s make a monumental comeback.  But while I’m waiting, now it’s looking like physical games, at least in the Sony world, are slowly going to be no longer.

Sony announced this week that they’ll be ending disc production for all new Playstation games starting in January 2028.

This means you’ve got a year and a half to hoard as much mf-ing Playstation games as you can.

This also means:

  • Games can be de-listed if there’s issues with the publisher where you just lose the game because it’s no longer accessible on Sony servers.

  • If your Sony account is compromised or banned, you immediately can’t play any of your games.

  • There’s no offline backups - whatever is online is what you play and you have to stay up to date no matter what.

  • No more reselling games or purchasing used games - can’t get a used copy of something that is digital.

  • You can’t lend/gift/borrow a physical game anymore - man I still remember renting games from Blockbuster back in the day.

Also the whole experience of buying a game is like completely broken at this point.  If you love playing video games, walking into a store with walls covered in cartridges and discs was like your Mecca.

Now when you walk into one of these stores the walls will be lined with empty boxes full of game vouchers - like wtf is that.

It’s like the ticket you get when you order ramen from a machine in Japan...except I don’t mind that experience - now wtf is the reason to go to a game store...to buy a Funko Pop???

bruh.

All of this coincides with the conversation online around the PS6 being a completely digital first console, meaning no disc drive at all.

I don’t know, I think this is all mad weird.  And yet another reason to go to Japan.  If you’re worried about losing physical copies of games or just that feeling of actually owning a physical game, there’s never been a better time to go to Akhibara in Tokyo and check out their game stores lined with physical copies of everything.

The hardest part is the time it takes finding a game from pulling out the boxes because lord knows what it says on the side of the box in Japanese.

...thank GOD Japan hoards everything.

This Summer Just Use This Camera

Boy oh boy do I have the camera for you!

Forget those digicams from 2003 everyone is using. Blah blah blah aesthetic this, Gen-Z that.

Lemme put you on some camera game.

If you’re looking to fuel the photography bug or you rather take pics with a camera over your phone, why don’t you try one of these?

The Kodak Charmera is a nod to the classic Kodak retro disposable cameras of the 80’s and 90’s. Except it’s digital and does video as well, alongside 7 different filter options, 4 frame options, and you can add the retro time stamp looking thing to your photos and videos.

Also the thing is a keychain!

These things are great for quick snaps, quick vids, and just something you want to use to capture a moment in a different style versus busting out your phone every time a guinea pig walks by.

This is Snowy

This is Ginger (yes that’s poop)

This is Lola

They’re a lot of fun as cameras and make great gifts - they come as a blind box so you don’t actually know which colour you’re going to get til you open the box.

AND Kodak just released a bunch of new Millennium inspired colours for all of you nostalgia buffs out there.

You can pick these up on Amazon or just literally Google them. I wish I had an affiliate link cuz I’d throw that in here to fund my next camera purchase but c’est la vie.
